Find A Hair Salon After a Bout with Cancer
Finding a hair salon to help your hair after cancer
Many women come to hair salons after their hair has started to grow back due to the effects of chemotherapy treatments. Losing your hair to chemo is a devastating thing and after months of having no hair, when it does grow back often it is different than your former hair. The texture, thickness and even color can change dramatically. When your hair starts to grow back after chemo is over, make sure your hairstylist is equipped to handle your new “virgin” hair. If not, there are plenty of hair salons that can help you find your new normal again.
Being diagnosed with #breastcancer is hard enough. Being told you will be undergoing chemotherapy treatments can be even worse. This means not only will you have to deal with foreign chemicals being pumped through your body that can cause illness and fatigue, you are most likely going to lose your hair. Once the initial shock of this wears off and you have been through the hair loss, it is time to focus on regrowth. As a cancer patient, losing my hair was harder than the surgery needed to remove cancer itself. However, anticipating its regrowth was exciting and invigorating. Originally a person with straight, long hair, when my hair started growing back, I was in for the shock of my life.
Often your hair will grow back with a different texture and volume than you had before. For me, curly isn’t even the word to describe how my hair grew back! I have never experienced curly hair in my life and now I was not only blessed with hair, it was curly and thicker than thick. Two years later, the curls are showing no signs of stopping! As difficult as it was to try and understand a new texture of hair, I needed to find a salon that would understand and be able to help me understand my new hair and how to take care of it.
If you are experiencing a new texture of hair due to chemo or even experience thinning hair due to age, finding the right hair stylist to help you is crucial. When you visit a new hair salon you need to ask questions to make sure it is the right fit for you and your hair. It’s as simple as asking if they have experience with cancer patients or hormonal issues that affect hair. Often times they do and they can make suggestions regarding the proper steps to color this new hair to what kind of products to use.
