How well do you know your hair?

You’ve been together forever, you and your hair. But are you giving your hair the love and attention that it actually needs? You may think you are doing the very best for it but are you really? Every hair type has special needs so you want to make sure you are giving your hair type the very best care. Besides visiting your hair salon regularly, you need to make sure you are taking care of it at home.

To help you get to the bottom of what’s going on up top of your head, let’s untangle some common myths.

Curly Hair

Myth: If you have curly hair you should skip shampooing it.

Fact: You shouldn’t skip shampooing your curly locks entirely. However, curly hair tends to dry out a lot faster and more often than other hair types so using a shampoo daily is never a good idea. Shampoos will strip your hair of the natural oils needed to keep your hair moisture locked in and those curls bouncy if you use it every day. Using a non-lathering shampoo every few days will keep your hair clean without stripping it.

Myth: Curly hair grows slower than straight hair.

Fact: Hair grows at the same rate no matter what texture it is. Hair grows at an average rate of a half-inch per month but because curly hair bends and curves, it is less noticeable.

Thick Hair

Myth: Rinsing your hair with cold water leaves your hair frizz free and shiny

Fact: Temperature has no effect on how your hair behaves; however, cold water will leave your condition and leave-in treatments in your hair. This gives your hair the look that it is sleeker and more luminous.

Myth: Brushing your hair vigorously every night is necessary to distribute oils

Fact: Brushing will indeed distribute oils throughout your hair but brushing vigorously is going to cause a lot of friction on your hair. This can cause breakage and frizziness. Take care when brushing.

Fine Hair

Myth: If your hair is oily cut back on shampooing

Fact: washing less frequently has no effect on the oils that are produced in your hair. That is due to hair type and genetics. In fact, if you skip shampooing, you are allowing oils and dead skin cells to accumulate, which could develop into a scalp condition.

Myth: Always shampoo before conditioning

Fact: This is a no brainer, right? Well, if you have fine hair the truth is that conditioners can create a lot of build up on your hair leaving it limp and weighed down. If you condition first, leaving in for 5-10 minutes and then shampooing out, you are more likely to have fine hair that is shiny and healthier.

These are just a few different hair textures and their myths. If you are unsure about your hair texture and what you should be doing with it, consult with your local hair salon and hair stylist and learn exactly what you should be doing to care for your hair. You only have one hair type, make sure you are giving it the best care you can.

Consult with a hair stylist at Legends Salon of Hillsborough and learn how you can be taking extra care of your luscious locks.
