How to keep your hair from tangling

It’s no secret that maintaining long and beautiful hair requires proper care, however, one of the most frustrating things about having long hair is having to constantly deal with knots and tangles. Not only is it time-consuming, it can also be quite painful and damaging. If you can relate, this post is for you. Your local hair salon in Hillsborough has some of the best tips on how to detangle your hair and minimize knots.

Why does our hair tangle anyway? There could be a few reasons why our hair is tangling a lot. Hair texture, frequency of brushing, exposure to the elements, as well as the overall healthiness of the hair can all contribute to knotting. Your hair is more likely to tangle if it is super thick and curly, long and fine, very dry and damaged, not brushing throughout the day, and/or you sleep with your hair down.

Like it or not, your hair will tangle, especially if you fit into one of the above categories. While there isn’t a magic formula on how to get rid of tangles forever, there are some things you can do to minimize tangling and the damage that comes from trying to detangle it. Here are some tips.

Condition your hair

Never skip on conditioner. Conditioning the hair after shampooing will help restore moisture back into it, which leaves it smoother and less likely to tangle. This rule applies to hair extensions as well.

Hair masks

Doing a hair mask once a week, even for just 30 minutes, will significantly improve the condition of your hair. It will be restored with moisture, nutrients and will feel more silky, shiny and healthy.

Wide-toothed comb

Although it is probably tempting to use a brush, using a wide-toothed comb, or a special detangling brush, is a much better idea. Not only will it remove the tangles more efficiently, but you will also protect your hair from being torn and damaged. It is also important to do this 2-3 times a day.

Use less hot tools

If you consistently blow-dry, straighten or curl your hair, you are exposing your hair strands to a lot of heat. This leads to dry, duller hair that is prone to breakage. Dry hair is more prone to tangling. Try using less hot tools, using them on low to medium settings and always use a heat protectant before styling.

While you are sleeping

Your hair can get tangled while you sleep. The friction against the pillow when you toss and turn causes it. Loosely braid your hair before sleep or tie it up in a loose bun.

If your hair is prone to tangling, the above tips can help you be a little less stressed with your long tresses. For more helpful and useful tips, it’s a good idea to pop into your local hair salon in Hillsborough and asked your hairstylist for other recommendations. It could even be something as simple as using different products or even cutting just an inch or two off your length.
